Anushka To Play The Doctor
Anushka has played a dual role in the Telugu film Arundhati. Anushka plays a performance oriented role and the role will showcase her acting skills instead of her glamour. Anushka has also been signed up to play the role of a doctor in a new Tamil film. Vijay is the hero. The film will go on to the sets shortly.
Ravi Teja to Enter Poltics?
It is usually actors who have interest in entering politics who initiate such programs to create an image for themselves in the public.
Is Ravi Teja gradually making small moves to enter politics? The actor is in his mid 40's and his career as a hero is not beyond a few more years, are these moves baby steps for the inevitable Political arrangetram?
Nagesh comedian died
Born as Gundu Rao to a Kannada Brahmin family in 1933, Nagesh was the most sought after actor in the MGR-Sivaji era of Tamil cinema in the 1960s and mid-seventies, and was a regular feature in the movies of these late superstars.
Nagesh, who was suffering from prolonged illness, breathed his last at his residence.
A 1000-film veteran, Nagesh was known for his timing and intonation that had the audience in splits. Even in serious movies, his roles were well-appreciated.
Nagesh has played some memorable characters. His role in ’Thiruvilaiyadal’ as Dharumi, a poet struggling to make ends meet and who gets a tete-a-tete with Lord Shiva, and as aspiring director Chellappa in ’Kadhalikaa Neramillai,’ are still remembered by Tamil movie-goers.
The actor also proved his mettle with serious roles in films like ’Ethirneechal’ and ’Neerkumizhi,’ besides playing the villain in Kamal Hassan starrer ’Apporva Sagotharagal,’ dubbed in Hindi as ’Appu Raja.’
Deepika’s turning pink
Recently, the Pink City caught a glimpse of glam girl Deepika Padukone who was here to be a part of an event organised by a soft drink brand. However, this is not Deepika’s first visit to the Pink city. The actress was here last week too.
This time around, Deepika arrived in the city on Thursday and was directly escorted to her hotel amidst tight security. In spite of spending an entire day in Jaipur, Deepika did not venture out of the hotel to sight see or shop. Says a source from the hotel, “Deepika was inside her room most of the time and security was tightened inside the hotel. Even the staff from the hotel was not allowed to wait on her. She was looked after by the staff from the soft drink brand. Deepika was served a buffet lunch which comprised of traditional Rajasthani dishes which included chicken curry, dal, paneer, chapatti and rice.” Deepika left her hotel early on Friday morning. She walked into the airport looking lovely in a white sweatshirt, white capris and huge sunglasses. Most of the passengers at the airport were not able to recognise the stunning actress immediately, but when they did, there was a beeline for autographs. As she was whiskered away by the security personnel of the airlines, the Pink City was left hoping that this pretty woman would be back soon.
Ranbir: Mad about Madhuri!
After having confessed his love for Deepika a hundred times over, Ranbir was asked whom he would like to take out on a date if given the chance, besides girlfriend Deeps! Put him in a spot? Nah! RK was quick enough to say, ’'Madhuri!’’ ’'Madhuri Dixit was my first crush’’ revealed the actor…
With Mads and hubby Nene in Mumbai city currently, we wonder how the couple is going to react to this honest confession!

John Abraham in Anurag Kashyap’s new film
Anurag is a reformed man. Gone are his angst and anger of yore. To top it, he has found love in newcomer Kalki Koechlin whom he introduces in his next release Dev D .
Even as ‘Dev D’ is yet to hit the theatres on February 6, Anurag has already started working on his next project, a thriller called ‘Bombay Velvet’. And to play the leading role he has roped in John. The protagonist of the film is a real life figure who became hero of masses in the 1960s.
The good news is Anurag also wants to reach out to masses through this film. Kashyap says he has learnt from his past mistakes and found out his weak points. In fact, he and John have agreed that they want their next film to be accessible to its audience, unlike the bizarre ‘No Smoking’.
So to write ‘Bombay Velvet’, Kashyap has roped in two writer friends of his who were the worst critics of ‘No Smoking’. Since the film’s protagonist is a real life individual, inputs from historians are also taken.
The movie will also star Naseeruddin Shah and Kay Kay Menon . It will be produced by TV 18.

Farah Khan splits chai on Riteish's face
She always wanted to be a film director, but somehow got into choreography. Then with the help of her friend/colleague, Shahrukh Khan, she got her film under production and made, she was the first woman to be nominated for the Filmfare Awards under the category of Best Director.
Now Farah Khan is going to act for a film 'Jaane Kahan Se Aayi' of Mr.Milap Zaveri's. In this Farah plays a filmmaker in the movie, and Ritiesh Deshmukh her assistant.
In the film Farah doesn't treat her assistant well and constantly insults him, so much so that once when he brings her some chai , she doesn't like it too much and spits it onto his face.
Poor Ritiesh! It took all of three re-takes till the shot was okayed. But Rits, we hear, was too sporting.
Genelia ‘most sought after girl’ says Krishna Vamsi
Her latest film ‘Sashirekha Parinayam’ has given her a chance to prove her acting talent once again. The film says Genelia is somewhat similar to her real life as she holds views that are similar to that of Sasirekha.
Director of Sasirekha Parinayam, Krishna Vamsi says that it is only Genelia who could have done the role of Sasirekha and nobody else. Vamsi says that Genelia is now the most sought after girl in the industry and also by people everywhere.
Charmy wants ‘love, love and more love’ from ‘would be’
Charmy is now very much excited about being named for the Best Actress award and bagging the prestigious Nandi award.
Charmy has not yet thought about her marriage and she is now focused on her career. She however seems to have left the decision about her marriage to her parents.
Charmy however has some idea about what her ‘would be husband’ should be like. The first quality she expects in her husband is that he should understand her completely and give her freedom. He should shower her with lots and lots of love and keep expressing his love for her all the time.

Dasari’s Mesthri in final stage
Mesthri is directed by Suresh Krishna, a disciple of Dasari Narayana Rao. The film has raised a lot of interest as it is said to contain many references to the recent political developments in the state.
Dasari is said to have taken several pot shots at Chiranjeevi and his newly launched party Praja Rajyam. Mohan Babu, a biter critic of Chiranjeevi is playing the role of an army major in the film.
Sri Hari is also playing an important role in the film. Mesthri is getting ready for release in March just ahead of the elections.
Can Jr. NTR save Nayanatara?
After giving a series of hits and hiking her remuneration to the one crore mark, Nayanatara is now literally down in the dumps. Her last three films have flopped miserably. Her Salute with Vishal, the much publicized film Kathanayakudu opposite Rajnikanth bombed at the box office.
Ever her latest release Villu directed by Prabhu with Vijay as the hero that hit the screens for Sankranthi flopped miserably.
Nayanatara is now acting in a film opposite Jr. NTR. VV Vinayak is the director. She has now pinned all her hopes on Jr. NTR to give her the much needed hit and revive her career once again.
Mamatha Mohandas croons for Naga Chaitanya
The film is being directed by Vasu Varma and Dil Raju is the producer. There was a lot of suspense over the choice of the heroine. The director finally zeroed in on yesteryear heroine Radha’s daughter for the female lead in the film.
The sexy Mamatha Mohandas is singing a song for the film in the music direction of Sandeep Chouta. The hot Arundathi heroine Anushka will do a special dance number for the film. As such, the expectations on the film are soaring by the day.

Trio enters tollywood!
Well, producer Bujji and director Kishore were our fans. We didn’t know that! They approached us and things fell into place. Also we were excited about this project because Siddharth was in the lead and we think he’s a fine actor. It was a great experience working with them –– they know their craft.
What was the challenge composing for a film in an unfamiliar language?
When you compose, you do the melody or the arrangement of the musical notes, which are syllables, not words. It has nothing to do with any particular language, in fact Shankar was singing Tamil words to our composition! Once the lyricist hears the melody, he composes the poetry. And Chandra Bose did a marvellous job that was perfectly metered and melodically beautiful. Words only add to the melody.
Some of your best works include scores for Bollywood. What’s it like making music for Bollywood?
Great, but some of the tracks we did like Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho and Bunty Aur Babli were special –– they took India by storm. Rock On!! was our maverick album
which is still number five on the charts. And then there was Konchem Ishtam, Konchem Kashtam (Telugu) which is number one right now!
Your music is a mix of three traditions. How do you describe it?
We do eclectic music not fusion. I don’t like the word fusion because it’s all about labelling. We are influenced by world music and you can clearly see the influence of the best of various styles–– rock, blues, jazz, classical in the music we do.
How did you manage both critical and commercial success?
Well it’s a fine line to walk and difficult to achieve. It’s like Rahman’s music, aesthetically beautiful and also commercially successful. To achieve the fine balance we have to work very hard–– keep trying all sorts of permutations and combinations till we get it. It’s a long process.
Future plans?
We are doing the scores for Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan and for Wake Up Sid which is directed by Ayaan Mukherjee, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. Then there’s It’s My Life which is a Bollywood remake of the Telugu film Bommarillu. And we have a couple of other Telugu projects.

Oscar is not the ultimate recognition: Bachchan
"You people have taken the Oscar as the best recognition and award," Bachchan said when asked if there was dearth of good Indian movies as very few have manged to get into an Oscar race.
"They are great in their place and we are so in our place. It is not that Oscar awards are the ultimate recognition," he told an audience during the release of a book on him "Bachchanalia" at the Jaipur Literature Festival here.
However, he hastened to add that he was happy that the artistes who were working behind the scenes were finally getting their due recognition. Bachchan said the nomination of Indian sound director Rasool Pookutty for an Oscar is all the more important, besides that of Rahman and Gulzar.
"It is encouraging when we see that the media, which conducts the film award ceremonies in India has started recognising the worth of background artists. Rasool, a sound engineer from India being nominated for the Oscar awards is definitely a wonderful news and makes me terribly happy for him," Bachchan said.
"Moreover, I hope that Rahman, who has already done India immensely proud brings back a second Oscar to the country," he said, a day after Indians bagged six Oscar nominations
"Oscar has its own place...We do not disrespect it.... If they wish to give us an Oscar they can do it...If not, it would be even better," he said.

Director Puri Jagannath watched Arndathi the other day. He was very much impressed with the way the film was made. Puri was also highly impressed with the performance of Anushka.
Puri has now decided to approach Anushka and narrate a story to her. Puri has prepared a woman-centric story and he is confident that Anushka will fit the bill perfectly.
Puri is now busy with work for his new film with Prabhas in the lead. The film with Anushka will be taken up after he is through with is current assignment.

The survey which asked voters to select their ideals on the basis of intelligence, charisma and ambition was topped by american actress Eva Mendes. Arundhati reaches 250 prints by tomorrow
Arundhati film was released with 100 prints on 16th January out of several initial hurdles ( producer palnned to release the film on 14th January). With tremendous mouth talk spreading life a wild fire, the producer had immense
pressure to increase the prints all over the world.
Producer Shyam Prasad reddy added prints to various centers in a staggered manner. The total number of prints will reach to 250 by tomorrow. In Prasads, Arundhati was released with three shows. From tomorrow, the shows number will be increased seven (including one show in IMAX screen).
In a center like Ongole, Arundhati is still running with 6 shows a day. Arundhati is going to release with 12 prints in USA on 23 January.
Trisha First time roped with Gopichand
For the first time, Gopichand gets A-list heroine to romance with. Trisha has officially signed Gopichand’s current film to be directed by Siva (of Sowryam fame). According to sources, she is paid a bomb for this film. Alhough Gopichand acted with beauties like Anushka, she was not that hot when she first acted with him in Laksyam, hence Trisha pairing with him makes special. Interestingly, Gopichand played villain in Trisha’s maiden Telugu film - Varsham. Five years later, both of them are paired together. Pullarao and Bhagavan are producing it while Tamil actor Satyaraj plays role of father to Gopichand in this movie.
Earlier Kajal was chosen for this role but she opted out, as she could not adjust dates. So Trisha is roped in by paying huge remuneration.
Regular shooting commences from February 1st week. Currently, Trisha has no other movies in Tamil and Telugu.

Making of ARUNDHATI Movie
Genesis of Arundhati
I had put my mind and soul into making of Anji. I worked really hard and enjoyed the process of working hard. I had seen failures before, but not of Anji magnitude. I was depressed after the release of Anji and lost my confidence. One and half year after the release of Anji, it got national award for the graphics. Our team went to New Delhi and got the award from the President of India. We mixed with best of the talent from all over the India during the awards function. We were partying that night to celebrate the award and the idea of making Arundhati struck me. I decided to make another film with more focus and dedication. I came back to Hyderabad next day and started working on it.
Genre
I liked films like Chandramukhi and Exorcist. I hated ‘A Nightmare On Elms Street’. I hate gore. But I am passionate about thrillers. I feel that horror genre is absurd. Fear is an emotion. I don’t think that all films should have navarasaalu. I believe in mastering one emotion and take it to the peaks in my films. You don’t see comedy and duets in Arundhati. People should experience a rollercoaster ride while watching Arundhati. I had rollercoaster ride while watching Jandhyala’s comedy Sreevariki Premalekha. A horror film has only small segment of viewers in India. I did not want to make just another film that creates fear in the mind of audiences. I made it a female oriented story for a bigger appeal so that entire family can watch it. I added classical dance to it. I wanted to mount the film on a grandeur scale. The film is going to be a pleasant watch except for two harsh scenes. I wanted to play the film on ‘fear of the evil spirit’.
Arundhati is about good fighting evil. Hence I had to make sure that both the characters of Arundhati and Pasupati equally powerful. Otherwise, there will not be any dramatic impact to the film. We did not spare any efforts to get the right actors.
Casting:
Anushka (Arundhati/Jejemma):
For this film to succeed, the heroine has to be right. I considered many options and approached some heroines. But I was not getting the right heroine. One day Gemini Kiran asked me why my next project was not starting. I told him that I was not getting the right heroine. He asked me for the specifications. I told him that I need a heroine with 5 feet and 10 inches height and she should look royal because she the queen, she rides on horses and elephants. He suggested the name of Anushka. I watched Super film and contacted her. We had many auditions. I gave her a scene in the film and told her that we are not going to give her any directions. She has to read the scene, interpret in her own way and enact the scene. She was terrified a bit, but gave a satisfactory performance.
Sonu Sood (Pasupathi):
I had Tamil actor Pasupati in my mind when I wrote the story. That is why I named the character as Pasupathi. He looks extremely good for the role of Aghora. But there is a royal side to the character where he has to look princely. That is when Ashok film got released and I noticed Sonu Sood in that film. I got hold of his number and called him over phone. I asked him to fly down to Hyderabad for get-up check. He was little surprised. When I shown him the sketches of Pasupathi character, he did not like playing such kind character. He came down for get-up check. Ramesh, who worked for Kamal Hassan films including Dasavatharam has worked for some of my films where I needed some challenging make-up work. Initially I wanted small inscriptions tattooed on the entire body of Sonu Sood in Aghora get-up. Ramesh told us that it would take six hours to do that make-up every day. He did inscription tattoos only on chest and stomach which took around 3 hours every time. Sonu Sood’s get-up also has a scar and big nails. We went into thorough detailing for that get-up. Though he did not like his role, he accepted it by looking at our enthusiasm.
Initially I asked him for 20 days. He quoted Rs 18 lakhs as remuneration for 20 days. He also gave an option where he would work for more number of days if we paid Rs 20 lakhs. I paid him Rs 18 lakhs and told him that I would pay Rs 25,000 per every extra day. And I ended up paying Rs 43 lacs at the end for the number of extra days I used him. I am very glad that he became successful in Hindi and is quoting to the tune of Rs 1 crore per film now.
Sayaji Shinde (Talla Sayibu):
Sayaji Shinde is like a hero on screen. He would help heroine at crucial moments. I considered Nasiruddin Shah, Nana Patekar and Atul Kulakarni for this role. And none of their dates were available. I called Sayaji Shinde for get-up change. He perfectly suited the role. He did lot of research on Fakir character on his own and used to tell us interesting things on sets. He has immense potential. He tries to understand each and every dialogue and scene. He would question us if he is not convinced. And he gives precisely what we want.
Sets:
Palace interiors:
We hired two floors of Annapurna studios to erect the sets of Palace interiors. The dimension of the floor is 180 feet x 120 feet. But I needed 250 feet floor. Hence we hired two floors. In one floor we have the ground floor of palace. In another floor, we have the first floor of palace that sports drums. It took 4 months to construct those sets and it cost me around Rs 85 lakhs to do the interiors.
The indoor scenes of 15 minute flashback episode are shot for 106 days. We worked inside the sets for six months. We had to age the set, then destruct it so that we had to shoot in the ruins.
We shot the village house scenes in Rama Naidu’s Nanakramguda village.
Palace exteriors: I wanted a place where palace stands atop of the hill. I found what I want in the fort of Banaganapally. We grew gardens for three months. It would cost a lot even if you whitewash the fort. But we varnished the entire fort though it is highly expensive to a give a facelift. Then we had to redo our work to age the fort and show it as a dilapidated fort for the latter part of the story.
Jewelry and Costumes:
Deepa from Mumbai designed the looks and jewelry of Arundhati character. Jejemma dress in Arundhati cost around 8 lakhs with 22 kilograms worth of jewelry on it. The manual labor cost for the embroidery on Jejemma saree cost around 1 lakh rupees. Anushka wore that heavy dress for 106 days (from the day of Aghora entering the palace to Jejemma locking him up).
Horses and elephant:
There is a scene in ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ in which the heroine rides the horse by sitting on a side. I wanted Anushka to learn horse riding. She used to get up at 4 am every morning and used to go for horse riding club which is situated beyond Gandipet. Then we scouted for the horses in Chennai and Bangalore, we got skinny horses. They suggested us to get good horses from Rajashtan. We could not get the right horses and could not shoot horse riding scene.
We had a scene in which Jejemma goes to a temple on Elephant ambari (in song). We got that elephant from Karnataka. The transportation got delayed and we had 400 junior artists waiting for the elephant which arrived on sets at 4 am.
You announced Sabhapati as the director first and then replaced?
I called Sabhapati and gave him the camera, lights, sets and Anushka and then asked him to shoot the climax part of the film. He has to shoot the climax, edit it and show it to me. If I liked his work, I would sign him as the director of the film. I did not like the work he delivered. I asked him to take time and do it one more time. I was still not satisfied and told him sorry. He is a good friend of mine. He stays in my place whenever he comes to Hyderabad.
Filmmaking:
Filmmaking is both pleasure and pain. One person goes through that pleasure or pain of filmmaking for a film. It could generally be the directors like Puri Jagan and Guna Sekhar who go through that process. But for my film, I am the one who goes through it. Releasing a film is like experiencing an orgasm. We go through the process of scripting, shooting, post-production and finally get the high while releasing it. If it’s coming the way we anticipated it’s a pleasure. If it’s not working out it’s a pain. In movies, we don’t get a second chance like TV serials and newspapers. If TV episode is not good today, we can correct it tomorrow. If today’s news standard is bad, tomorrow we can better it. But our movies fate is sealed in just two hours after the release.
Two versions of Arundhati
We took 210 days to shot the first version of Arundhati and I did not like it. We took another 40 days to shoot the version two with changes. And in those 40 days I could get 70% of betterment to the original version. We did 120 days worth of the shoot in those 40 days.
Small film - big budget
I started the film with a compact budget of 3 crores. After going to sets I though it would cost 6-7 crores. I don’t stop at anything when I start making a film. And I ended up spending 13.5 crores on the film. I believe in spending money. You get what you pay for. If you pay 2 lacs, you will get Maruthi 800. If you pay 30 lacs, you will get a Benz.source: idlebrain.com
Charmi's Kiss & Cleavage Show
Recently, the stills of the movie were released and that was good enough for folks to get stumped. Charmi was busy smooching this lucky newcomer in a major way and while kissing has been one aspect, what stole the eyes of the onlookers was the alarmingly low necklines that revealed her luscious cleavage.
While Charmi is said to have quashed about the kissing thing stating they have been created out of trick photography, what folks fail to understand is what sort of tricks can be used to reveal a cleavage that has the deepest of necklines and an enticingly inviting appearance. Your thoughts on this Charmi!!!!!!!!
Aishwarya Rai For Hindi Arundhati?
She is now busy with Tamil flick 'Endhiran' (Robo) pairing with Rajni Kanth. Talks have started with Aishwarya Rai and if everything goes well she would become Hindi Arundhati.
It is said that even the film corporations like Adlabs are coming forward to join hands with Shyam Prasad Reddy for this Hindi venture. Let us see how things move.
Semi-porn shock in city multiplexes
Though online eviews of the film have already termed it ‘semi porn’, there was warning was flashed on the screen informing viewers of the objectionable scenes. "My wife and I went to watch the film thinking it was an action flick. Every scene after the first few shots was appalling. The theatre was filled with youngsters, who were hooting like hooligans. We wanted to walk out, but had to wait for the apt moment," says a city based doctor, who didn’t wish to be named.
What’s even more shocking is the fact that the film comes with ‘U/A’ certificate, which means children above 12 years are allowed to watch it and only those below 12 need parental guidance. "The censor board is ineffective. They surely know a 13-year-old can’t be allowed to watch such content. This is the case with Telugu films too. They have sleazy scenes and abusive content but are screened in theatres without any warning," says M. Sulochna, a mother of two, who is also head of commerce department, Osmania University.
"It is not possible for us to monitor what their kids are watching all the time. There should be some social responsibility at every level. Theatres should not let children walk in to watch just about any film," says Kausar Farooq, head teacher, Glendale Edufun who is the mother of a teenager. However, theatres feel public support is essential for taking any such
Allu Aravind create history in Bollywood
Novel theme, great makeovers and over-the-top promotion worked wonders to gross around Rs 200 crore in the initial collections itself and the film is still going strong. "Undoubtedly, the producer could easily make a profit of around Rs 50 to 60 crore in the end. Besides varied rights, he would have distributed the film on `sharing basis' in major centres across the country by tying up with a Mumbai-based distribution company," says a trade analyst, who marks it as a highest profit ever made by a Telugu producer on a Hindi film.
At one point of time, stars like Jeetendra thrived on Telugu remakes and was also branded a 'Southie' star. "Even other top Bollywood stars kept track of Telugu hits and vied with each other to act in remakes," says a leading producer. Even thespian Ramanaidu who made Hindi hits like Prem Nagar, Dildaar and Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain feels the same. "Even today Bollywood stars would love to do a film with us, but we need a sensational Telugu hit on hand and rest will fall in place," he asserts.
Excuse me Mr Mallanna, there’s a problem.

Gossips always take center stage in artists’ life and when questioned about her being paired up with Devi Sri Prasad in recent headlines, she abruptly denies it.
Speculations made propaganda about Charmme’s affair with Devi and they are all set to act in a movie together.
But, later both sides denied such grapevines and clarified it’s not true. Now, to put a full stop to such unwanted talks, Charmme has clearly stated ‘Devi is one of my best friends and that’s it.’
Let’s hope this frank statement of Charmme abates further gossips on this issue.

Vijayashanthi prefers politician to hero
Vijayashanthi has been crying from the rooftops that she will not rest until her goal of achieving separate Telangana was reached. But she soon ran out of steam and the party also did not boast of any big leader not did it have any cadre worth the name.
After Chiranjeevi entered politics and launched the PRP, many people expected that Vijayashanthi would sail with Chiranjeevi. But no such thing happened.
Vijayashanthi has now made her choice clear. She prefers to sail with the wily politician K Chandrashelar Rao than with megastar Chiranjeevi, her one time hero in films. She will merger her Talli Telanagana Party with the TRS later this month.

Pavan Kalyan quitting from Films?
Party sources say Pavan Kalyan, who is presently busy with his film schedule, will wind it up in a week or two. And he might announce quitting the film field to take up politics on full-time basis like his brother Chiranjeevi.
The decision to quit films is said to be entirely of that of Pavan Kalyan, though Chiranjeevi wants that his younger brother continue to do films on and off. However, Pavan is of the view that he won't be able to do justice to the party, if he does films and that it would be difficult to sustain on-screen and off-screen images at a time. "If it is full-time politics, we need to do justice to it. There is nothing called part-time activity in politics," he is learnt to have told his friends.
Well, that is a good idea. But, he can go back to films, if PRP does not do well in the coming elections!

Sheela is hot and Hansika sensuous
Sheela played a homely girl in Parugu and therefore it came as a big surprise to see her in an entirely new fashion. Sheela sported some trendy and revealing outfits and she sizzled in each and every scene.
Hansika Motwani looked sensuous and her charm was of a totally different kind. The two were in complete contrast but managed to impress in their own different ways. While it appears that the two of them may have shared equal honours, it is obvious that Sheela scored a little more than Hansika in terms of the oomph factor.

Another Indian student killed on US campus
The body of Abhijeet Mahato, 29, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur alumnus doing his Ph.D at the Dukes Pratt School of Engineering, Durham, was found Friday night at an off-campus apartment complex by his friends and colleagues.
The Durham police were quoted as saying they did not yet have a motive for the shooting by unidentified gunmen. No arrests were made so far.
Two Indian doctoral students, Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam, were shot dead five weeks ago in the Louisiana State University (LSU), Baton Rouge. In that case too, the police have yet to find a motive or arrest any suspects.
"We're shocked about the why, why, why of it," Leela Prasad, Duke's associate professor of ethics and Indian religion, was quoted as saying. "Right after the LSU murders, this senseless attack is hard to digest."
Rahul Chhabra, spokesperson of the Indian embassy in Washington, said: "We are ascertaining facts and trying to get in touch with the Duke university. An officer will be sent to the university once we know the facts."
Mahato, described by his friends as an outgoing student who was seldom seen without a smile, was born in Tatanagar and raised in Kolkata. He did his Bachelor in Engineering from Jadavpur University and M. Tech. from IIT Kanpur.
He was at the GE Global Research Centre in Bangalore for two years before coming to Duke.
Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs at Duke, said: "This is a tragic circumstance, and we are doing everything possible to assist those who may be affected by it."
